Nokia N96 The Task Of Edition Special Face The Getting
The good: proceeds from all sales of the Nokia N96 bought this way will also be donated to charity. Donors and winners will not even get the phone earlier than anyone in their country. You need to try it out yourself to see what I mean.

A new site for the Nokia N96 surfaced yesterday. There’s an incentive to watch all six videos: you can’t enter the competition without viewing them all!

The limited edition Nokia N96 comes in a decorated ash tree box with unique numbering on the inside cover, silk cover, 8GB microSD, and leaflet about the WWF project to save the red pandas in Nepal.

While I like the charity part of this limited edition Nokia N96, I’m not so sure about the exclusivity of this phone. There are six main features summarized in text and then shown in video how it is used shortly afterwards. To my understanding, only the box is numbered… not the phone. If you can’t afford it, try winning it in their competition.

Face The Task does a good job showing the features of the Nokia N96. Will the color of the phone be at least different from what’s going to come out to the general public? The general colorway comes out later this month, but Nike decided to release a limited amount of the special colorway much earlier than the public release and then even have Kobe Bryant autograph the first 10 sold. The bad: $759 euros.

We can share the surprise. I’m currently using the black beauty Nokia N95 8GB, so maybe my eyes are liking the white version of the Nokia E71 because I want something different.

I’m still liking the white version of the Nokia E71 video hands-on review by Sascha Segan from Gearlog, I can see up close how the white Nokia E71 looks like around different reflections.

One of the concerns I have with the Nokia E71 is which color to get. The press release photos looks marvelous, while photos I’ve seen make the white keyboard contrasting from the rest of the body make it ugly in my eyes.

The white keyboard does not look right with certain reflections, but it looks really attractive through other reflections. Something looks off doesn’t it? White or Grey?

Steps For The Sender Open Nokia Maps and wait until your location is found. Press the center key -> send. Meeting up is easy. Nokia Maps will not be able to display anything using the text alone. The MMS attaches an object/file that your friend needs to open so that Nokia Maps can display your location.

Steps For The Receiver Open the message and select options -> objects. Click on the .lmx file to see the address info in text. Click options again, then “Show on map” to see the location on Nokia Maps. From here, you can choose to navigate by walking or driving to meet up!

Recommendation

As a user, I think it would be better if my inbox automatically recognizes the the .lmx file and give the option of showing the location straight from the message. Having to click options -> object -> options -> show on map is a little redundant. Have a lot of friends nearby with the latest Nokia phones?

Thanks to Ricky Cadden from Symbian-Guru for helping me out with this topic! There are several ways to send locations, but I found multimedia text (mms) the most convenient. The MMS will automatically insert the address of your location in the message but you can edit as shown on the image below.

All I did was change the code so that the bluetooth menu opens. I’ve changed it to open the bluetooth menu on my Nokia N95 8GB. Create it if it is not already there. Enable it on ROMPatcher (see: How to Hack S60 phones) and set it to autorun so you won’t need to reactivate it after reboot.

What I don’t like about SkyeQuiKey is that it makes my Google Search application unusable. I can no longer search the web on my main screen using Google Search S60 application. It lets you have access to contacts, applications, and bookmarks by typing in the first few letters at the main screen.

American On To Change N95 Smoother Back Nokia Fonts North 8GB The Using LT To: How FontRouter
If you’re still curious, you have to access and edit the e:\data\fonts\fontrouter.ini with a file explorer like X-plore. I’m confused why the Nokia N95 8GB’s fonts got altered after the firmware upgrade since I’m sure people like anti-aliasing turned on by default.

Others use FontRouter to change the font type on their phones, but I’ll save that for another post.

There’s no icon to access the FontRouter application and there’s no need to change anything. There’s no option or settings in our phone for us to change it back, but I’ll show you how to turn it back on by simply installing FontRouter LT.

Anti-aliasing OFF vs ON

All you need to do is install FontRouter LT (I suggest to your memory card). Reboot after making any changes. Reboot and you’re done. The setting that forces anti-aliasing is:

This tip also works for other phones with anti-aliasing turned off, but I don’t know which exact models those are.

After the upgrading to the latest firmware v20.2.005 for the North American Nokia N95 8GB, you probably noticed the rougher fonts due to anti-aliasing getting tuned off.

Not bad, right? I honestly did not expect the video to play on the Nokia E71 but it surprisingly did. Using my video conversion guide, I converted the trailer of Hancock and sent the same file to both the Nokia E71 and Nokia N95 8GB for a video playback comparison. The Nokia E71 is more comfortable with 15fps. After finding this information out, I now have to make sure all my vlog mobile formats should be converted to 15fps from now on so Nokia E71 users can watch them on their phone.

For better comparison, I suggest watching the high resolution format.

This test, however is still not conclusive that the Nokia E71 is capable of playing all videos that plays well on the Nokia N95 8GB. What’s cool is that I don’t have to tilt the phone to the side since the orientation of the Nokia E71 display is already in landscape. The Nokia E71 struggles with 320×240 videos at 30fps unlike the Nokia N95 8GB.

Phones Hack How Nokia To: S60
Hacking your S60 phone will let you install unsigned applications without a hassle and even apply some patches if you like. CapsOn brings it back to normal state.

If I see any useful patches that interests me, I’ll make sure to mention it. Don’t exit. Install and run HelloCarbide by FCA00000. Switch to X-plore and check if you can see the contents of C:/sys/. There really isn’t much right now. Run CapsOff application to turn on the hack. Download SIS installer mod for Symbian 9.2 and copy installserver.exe file to c:\sys\bin\ so you can install unsigned applications Install ROMPatcher by Zorn. Whenever you need to install an unsigned application or patch your phone, just run the CapsOff application first. It’s much easier than I thought!

Steps To Hack Nokia S60 Phone Install freeware X-plore, a file manager from Lonely Cat Games. You can do this with X-Plore. Install CapsOn.sisx and CapsOff.sisx. If not, try step 2 again. Download CapsOnOff.rar by FCA00000. Copy CProfDriver_SISX.ldd from RAR downloaded above into C:\sys\bin of your phone.

This guide will be referenced to many times in the future, so I am posting the instructions to hacking your S60 Nokia phones now. Take a look at the SF modding forums for new patches. They were the source of these instructions.

Now that you have a hacked Nokia S60 phone, try installing some unsigned applications! If you can, then you are halfway done.

My Review: 8600 Luna Dumbphone Nokia - Favorite New
It has a 2 megapixel camera, a media player and a wap browser. The sliding mechanism feels very tight and as a whole the phone is quite heavy. Prices are going down, although it could still run you $500+. The buttons feel good when pressed give just the right amount of feedback, I actually liked it better than my Nokia N95 8GB’s keys to be honest. If an authorized dealer has it in stock you might just luck out on this phone, because the Arte and Sapphire being the new craze around the Nokia luxury line. The fact that a large portion of the phone is made with stainless steel or smoked glass should already be an indicator of the quality of the luna. When on sleep mode the keypad pulses under the translucent smoked glass, giving it much of it’s aesthetic appeal (and the reason it was dubbed the Luna). The media player becomes a slightly moot point as there are only 128 megs of internal memory and no memory card slot.

Features

The Nokia 8600 Luna is pretty sparse on features, as it was made to look cool, make calls, and turn heads. With the edge connection off I’ve had it last me 4 days with moderate calling.

First and foremost this phone has the best build quality I have ever felt, it simply oozes with quality.

About 3 weeks ago i took the plunge and bought a Nokia 8600 Luna. The allure of this phone also mainly comes from pulsating keypad. With a mix of moderate calling, light internet use, and an most power-saving options off, the luna lasts me 2 about 2-3 days without needing a charge, depending on usage. Its kind of refreshing to just have a phone thats a little smaller/thinner, while still having a handset that’s still a cut above the rest (and still technically able to do a lot of the functions my other phones can, just not as well). Why would I turn the power save options off? When off, it goes indefinitely, beautiful.

Final Thoughts

Once again, if you want a solid phone (that mainly makes calls) with a small form factor, is rare and looks awesome, this might be a good bet. The two megapixel camera is nothing to write home about, but it gets the job done if you are looking to take a picture on the fly, its no N95 though, thats for sure. When power saving is on, the keypad stops pulsing after a few minutes. I wasn’t keen on spending 900-1200 dollars on a Sapphire, and I got a really good deal on the Luna, so here I am really satisfied with my purchase. The Wap browser is your usual non smartphone browser fare(It has edge btw, sorry no 3g).

The call quality tested in NYC, Westchester and New Jersey on AT&T was excellent, this phone has one of the louder speakers I’ve heard.

Currently, between the phones I cycle through (Nokia N95-4, Blackberry Curve, SE K850i), I prefer using this for regular daily usage when the specialized features of the previously mentioned phones isn’t necessary.

I have read some complaints about the keypad being a bit cramped, I can’t say I agree with this, but the Nokia Luna is not particularly wide so if one has larger hands it may pose a problem.

I just opened it, and it’s got stuff from those Mapsters creatures I previously told you about that gives us guides on the new Nokia Maps 2.0.

On Shortcut ‘0? To: Nseries Change How Bluetooth to On/Off
I’ve changed it to open the bluetooth menu on my Nokia N95 8GB. But I decline all responsability, of course. In other words: 0×12345678 becomes 78563412 ; For example: ; FExplorer UID = 0xE00012DF therefore xxDIUxxx=DF1200E0 ; Calculator UID = 0×10005902 therefore xxDIUxxx=02590010 ; OperaMini UID = 0×101D3166 therefore xxDIUxxx=66311D10 In this case, be aware that it takes some time (5 seconds) to open. Unmodified, pressing 0 will open Opera Mini if you have that installed. Since the The UID for bluetooth menu is 10005951, convert it to little-endian which results in 51590010. Then, swap bytes to little-indian to get xxDIUxxx. By turning on bluetooth only when you need it, you can save battery life and prevent unwanted file transfers.

Prerequsites

The first thing you need is a hacked Nokia S60 phone. You can find out how to do this by reading How To Hack Your S60 Phone guide.

The instructions below include editing the original ChangeBrowserOnKey.rmp patch by FCA00000 and uploading it to your phone.

Bluetooth can be turned on/off by pressing the * key on some Eseries devices like the Nokia E66 and Nokia E71. ; You need to know its UID. You convert ABCDEFGH to GHEFCDAB. The modified code is then shown afterwards for the bluetooth shortcut. Notice that lines starting with ‘;’ are comments.

Useless Search Sort Hacked the Removed Screen… My S60 Phone Of Main On and Nokia The
The bad thing about it is the changes applied by the patch needs to be reapplied every time the phone is restarted.

There’s no option to remove the Search on the active display. Go to Symbian-Freak’s Modding forums for instructions on hacking S60 and using the ROMPatcher.

A topic I haven’t talked about here on the Nokia blog is about hacking S60. I don’t use it and don’t really want it on my main screen. Is it worth it? In essence, hacking your S60-powered phones like the Nokia Nseries and Eseries devices lets you install unsigned applications and apply patches. I rather use the Google Search app.

Via Hayden, Sony Ericsson has released a new version of their Themes Creator tool (v 3.27) on their Developer site. When changing the color parameters, the tool will, in real-time, suggest a harmonious color scheme for the various elements in the theme and then apply the result to the whole theme. According to Hayden, for other devices one must distribute the SWF content separately from the theme.

After the upgrading to the latest firmware v20.2.005 for the North American Nokia N95 8GB, you probably noticed the rougher fonts due to anti-aliasing getting tuned off. I’m confused why the Nokia N95 8GB’s fonts got altered after the firmware upgrade since I’m sure people like anti-aliasing turned on by default. Reboot after making any changes. The setting that forces anti-aliasing is:

This tip also works for other phones with anti-aliasing turned off, but I don’t know which exact models those are.

There’s no icon to access the FontRouter application and there’s no need to change anything. Others use FontRouter to change the font type on their phones, but I’ll save that for another post. If you’re still curious, you have to access and edit the e:\data\fonts\fontrouter.ini with a file explorer like X-plore.

Symbian has passed 200 million lifetime shipments, which makes it 3rd most succesful (when counting the amount of devices) platform in the mobile space. J2ME is clearly leading, and Flash Lite comes after that with about 600 million devices having Flash pre-installed.
