Launching tomorrow, May 23rd, is The Mapsters website. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
For a preview, check out this screencast I made of the section where one of the Mapsters is showing us the navigation feature. I had the opportunity to preview the Mapsters before the launch. These cute not-so-little creatures shows off the full feature set of Nokia Maps 2.0 and what you might want to use it for. I’m not sure if I didn’t have enough breakfast because I’m getting a headache listening to their voices.

Written by David Brown (from agencynet.com), and in this 5 page tutorial he describes the process of creating the Bacardi® Mobile Cocktail application, including reacting to environment changes (like current time of day), and how to implement automatic Stage size and orientation switching.
Via Bill, there is a new article in Adobe Developer Center: Developing Flash Lite applications with dynamic layouts. This tutorial is for Flash Lite 2.0 and newer.
Sony Ericsson Flash tool of Creator packaging files Lite now allows Themes
The devices able to use the Flash Lite files include C702, C902, W760, W980 (Flash Lite 2.0 devices).
Via Hayden, Sony Ericsson has released a new version of their Themes Creator tool (v 3.27) on their Developer site. According to Hayden, for other devices one must distribute the SWF content separately from the theme.
“New Theme Generator feature
The Theme Generator is a new feature in the tool that lets designers quickly create harmonious themes based on a predefined color formula by allowing you to change the general colorization of the theme using the color wheel, color sliders or by directly changing the HEX values. When changing the color parameters, the tool will, in real-time, suggest a harmonious color scheme for the various elements in the theme and then apply the result to the whole theme. Another option is to use the Theme Generator feature as a starting point for getting a set of colors for the various elements in the theme and then go on from there and add images, graphics, animations, sound effects etc.”
The tool is available for Windows, OS X (MAC) and Linux.
It allows the packaging of Flash Lite files (screensaver/wallpaper) into the Themes files.

A N82 Review: Black Week The Nokia With
On the N95, the camera button has a lot of give, so a gentle press activates the autofocus.
On Monday, I received a black Nokia N82 to trial. The AD-54 makes a suitable replacement; the N82 had no problems using it. It performs like a joystick with a hat on top and is very responsive. Read on for my initial impressions as well thoughts on the form and function.
Initial Impressions
The phone looks amazing. On the N95, transitions between screens would seem glitchy. Opening a clip from the Video Center always goes to fullscreen. I do miss the ability to hold down the multimedia button to load the music player.
Music. As a music player, the Nokia N82 is great. The integrated location feature is great.
Lanyard Hole. I don’t like the placement of the lanyard hole. On Wednesday, I tested out the Sport Tracker application. I love these buttons. My N95 could never pull this off reliably. It loads and performs with the same speed as my N95-1 (with v21 firmware). Games would start in a random orientation; one game starts in 180 mode, another in landscape, another in portrait. The only knock against them is they have a white back light. I often have to use a fingernail to get enough precision pressure to activate the button.
Input/Output. I don’t like the placement of the charger port. The auto mode on the N82 probably has been better tweaked. With the N82, it takes a bit more force.
The directional pad is a joy to use. The multimedia button is hard to press. The daylight picture quality seems a bit better. I took a walk around the neighborhood and was able to take pictures while also have the music player running. I have not had any accidental presses of the either menu or multimedia buttons like on my N95. Most people see the small number keys and say that’s a horrible design decision. The layout is excellent. The Contacts page can be set up like a speed dial. It makes it impossible to use the phone one handed while charging.

I’m a fan of the playback buttons on the N95 and the N82 is a little limited by its lack of such buttons. They are little stiff from being new, but I definitely prefer the Nokia N82 keypad over my N95-1. It fits well in my hand; the weight of the device feels just right.
Video. Video playback has been a joy. Paired with the Nokia BH-601, music performance was great and the playback buttons worked fine.
The camera button doesn’t stick out much compared to my Nokia N95. Gallery shows your last picture and quick access to albums. I’d have preferred blue.
The number keys aren’t the only buttons that are stiff. The black color and slippery casing make it feel like a luxury device. I really love the integration of each item. I plugged in my Grado SR-80 headphones and was incredibly relieved to find the hiss from the N95 was gone.
Form and Function
Multimedia Menu. I’ve enjoyed the new multimedia carousel menu. It creates a very snug fit, there’s no worry it will fall out like on the old Pop-Port cables. A record of my photo walk can be found here.
Final Thoughts
That’s been my first week with the Nokia N82 Black.
I don’t have a problem with the change to micro-usb. Transitions are seamless and the orientation is always in portrait.
Camera. Here’s a funny fact about the camera. It seems like every time I started the camera, it already has a GPS lock. I absolutely adore this device and look forward to testing it out at a sporting event over the weekend and some night events over the next week. This is gone from the N82.
Buttons. A lot has been said about the keypad. I love this, since the Nokia N95 won’t do this if its in portrait mode. I love having a large center button.
Multitasking. I’ve been floored by all the multitasking I’ve been able to do. The placement of the speakers really excels here, as the video experience is better in stereo.
Games. Gaming with N-Gage is flawless. Another workaround is to use am A2DP headset. It is also a hindrance when watching video, since you can’t prop the N82 against something with the plug on the side. It forces the N82 to be worn on the left hand and forces two handed use. Maps goes to the last placed you looked up. If you haven’t read it yet, also check out Mark’s review on the silver Nokia N82 and the review of the Nokia N82’s 5 megapixel camera. Music has the last played track. As soon as I got it out of the box, I was in love. Videos shows the last clip viewed.

These slides are all available for us to download and print read before class. While my classmates using a physical book have to go through the index to find the drug, I can type the first three letters on my phone and usually find the specific drug instantly. I can enter calendar entries on Google Calendar while I’m at home using my Macbook, or use one of the PC’s at the school computer lab.
Quickoffice
Quickoffice is an office suite that can read/write documents, presentations, and sheets. Knowing project due dates is really important and I need constant reminders.
If that’s not geeky enough for you, connect a bluetooth keyboard to the phone. The three main applications I focused on are Mobipocket Reader, Quickoffice, and GooSync.
Mobipocket Reader
Mobipocket Reader is an eBook reader. I can also enter the dates on my Nokia N95 8GB’s built in calendar application, but no matter what other device I use to enter meetings or due dates, it is all synchronized using GooSync. I added a drug reference eBook for use. I can’t speak for all students, but all of my professors use Powerpoint presentations for lectures.
It is also faster. As a nursing student, I need to know what kind of medications I give to patients. You don’t need to carry that laptop to school!
GooSync
Goosync synchronizes the phone’s calendar with Google Calendar. Like I explained in my previous post, carrying a small device in my pocket instead of a thick reference book is more convenient. Type in extra notes on each slide as the professor speaks.

On a side note, I like the way they say, “Nokia N95 eight gig” instead of “eight gigabyte” on these ads.

It’s shorter and sounds much cooler. He then uses the 5 megapixel camera to take pictures while waiting for his mom to pick him up. Now we have the world’s worst magician using the Nokia N95 8GB’s GPS to find his way when he gets lost in his disappearing act. I think I’ll start saying it this way from now on… “Hi, my name is Mark and I love the Nokia N95 eight gig.”
