Learn Finnish, Flash Lite application
Nice example of mobile Flash Lite education application by David Dewhurst, Learn Finnish. “Flash Finnish is a free mobile phone game designed to help you learn Finnish. It features basic vocabulary, colours and numbers.” It is tested on Nokia N95 only at this point, and it’s a Flash Lite 2.0 application. There’s no reason why you shouldn’t learn Finnish language, go grab it

Nokia 8GB Part I Review: N81
You tap once to bring up profiles like silent, normal, vibrate, etc… then keep tapping to go down the list. Nothing special about the volume keys! More details on that on my software and interface review of the Nokia N81. Camera button. It is the same screen size as the Nokia N93i. You do not need to slide it in place all the way. It connects to a middle piece where you can control music or pick up phone calls. From an arm’s length, the front of the phone looks like it is black with mocha on the sides. It is definitely loud enough to start a small party anywhere! Part I Conclusion Overall I like the design of the Nokia N81 8GB. We are going to see this in many upcoming phones and I love it! What surprised me is that the Naviwheel, which is supposed to work like the iPod wheel navigation, is off by default. The Nokia N81 8GB feels heavier in the hands than the Nokia N95. But watch your thumbs! This option is not available in my Nokia N95. Pencil Key. You have to go to the settings to turn it on. There is no auto focus on the 2-megapixel camera of the Nokia N81. There’s no pencil key in the Nokia N81, which you can find in other Nseries phones. The gaming keys lights up when playing an N-gage game and also when used to zoom in or out of photos in the gallery. Naviwheel. According to the box, the Nokia N81 8GB is warm silver/brown. However, it is hard to settle down for this size, knowing that the Nokia N95 8GB has a 2.8 inch screen. Volume up… volume down. Input and Output Earphones. It does not bother me that the pencil key is gone because the same options can be brought up by pressing the * button while texting as well. If I want to turn it off, I just hold the button down. Volume Keys. The Nokia N81 includes a micro-USB port for data transfers with our computers. However, I’m glad they provide the option of turning it on or off, instead of leaving it on by default. What’s cool is that you can do this while doing something else like browsing the web, checking email, or even playing a game. Hold it again to activate the desired profile. Nice and subtle. The battery cover of the Nokia N81 8GB has shiny brown speckles. Slide. In this post, I’ll go in-depth with the form factor of the phone and how it is related to the functions. For example, the music keys are dimmed and the gaming keys are off when using the phone in general. Next to the power button is the key lock that slides to the right and goes back to its original position. This comes in real handy if you do not want the music to play randomly while your phone is inside your bag. The Nokia N81 has a 2.4 inch display. If two of those buttons are the dedicated gaming keys, that means the other 16 buttons are packed together with the Naviwheel. I am not sure whether future firmware updates will enable it throughout the whole phone. You can press the play button at any time to play the last song you were listening to. You can play music while doing other things like reading my blog! Music keys. I get to experience it first-hand. This phone will be great for those who spend a lot of time listening to music, and also want to play games on their phone because of the dedicated gaming keys. It doesn’t look like a big difference, but you can certainly feel it when you hold both of them. Display. I’ll review about using the Nokia N81 8GB interface and software in a later post. I mentioned in my preview of the Nokia N81 8GB, it has really loud speakers. It requires more than average effort to press the Naviwheel, and expect accidental keypresses because of the many buttons packed together in a small space. Music keys are dimmed when the Music player is not used. And to end this part of the review, watch my friends and I make a fool of ourselves lip singing about the Nokia N81… if you haven’t seen it yet. Note: All the photos in this post were taken with the Nokia N95. —Related Articles at the Nokia blog:Video: Nokia N81 8GB Final Production Unboxing and Initial UsageVideo: Nokia N81 Commercial The Next EpisodeNokia N95 Review by the Nokialist Part 1Review: Nokia N81 8GB Part IINokia N95 8GB CommercialVideo: The Nokia N81 Song Lip Sync The Naviwheel navigation is only useable in the multimedia menu, music player, and photo gallery. Keyguard slide. After playing with it, I actually just prefer turning the Naviwheel option off. I also found the Naviwheel very sturdy, requiring a lot of effort to press down. You can find out more about Nokia’s new bluetooth headsets at Non Stop Living. Listening to music with the included earphones. Micro-USB. The Nokia N81 8GB came with earphones that go around the back of your neck. However, you can choose to turn the keyguard option on automatically when closing the slide in the settings. A closer look of the back of the phone shows tiny speckles that shine as light reflects from the panel. I can lose my USB cable, and know that I can go into any electronics store to buy one right away if I don’t have a spare one lying around. Speakers. I also like that the display is protected by another layer instead of just flat with the whole fascia. The 2.4 inch screen on the Nokia N81 8GB leaves you wanting more. Color. When the music player is on, the music keys light up. For the the physical aspects of the N81 8GB, I think the phone is well designed and nicely built, but it has a few annoyances. You might also want to read my preview of the Nokia N81 8GB and watch my unboxing video of the N81 along with this review. Overview Weight. The attention to details like the dimming and the lighting of the music and gaming keys at the right moment is pretty cool. Let’s see the keys in that area: green call, red end-call, left soft-key, right soft-key, main menu, multimedia menu, clear, play/pause, stop, forward, back, left, right, up, down, and center. Even though there’s a lot of buttons in that part of the phone, Nokia does a great job illuminating only the necessary buttons depending on what you are using. I am reviewing the Nokia N81 8GB in two parts. I was in a really quiet hallway yesterday with the Nokia N81 in my backpack and it scared the hell out of me when something just played out of nowhere. The power button works similar to any other Nseries phone. You can also use your own earphones if you like, but, people are starting to use bluetooth headphones to listen to music on their phones. While it may not be a major problem to some, I found it annoying to press down hard when scrolling through web pages. In my preview of the Nokia N81 8GB, I mentioned that the N81 weighs 140 grams, while the N95 weighs 120 grams. It moves by itself with a nice snapping sound when you push it up or down halfway through. Buttons When the N81 8GB is closed while hiding the numeric keypad, I counted 18 buttons just on the front part of the phone! That means you can’t hold the camera button halfway to focus on your subject. The sliding mechanism is firm. I prefer regular earphones that go down my neck, but joggers like the ones that go around the neck because it doesn’t fall out easily. This means snapping pictures is really quick, but don’t expect the same quality from the Nokia N95 with autofocus. There is no auto focus on the Nokia N81 8GB camera. Power. I also like that the title of the song pops up on the upper right corner display if I am not currently not on the music player display. It is useful in copying and pasting text, but since this button is not available in the N81, Nokia provided “Editing options” in the menu where copy and paste are available.

Nokia and NTT Docomo have stated that they will support Flash Lite 3 in their mobile devices. The footprint of the player is 380 kb, meaning it is considerably less than previous Flash Lite player. Flash Lite 3 is now officially launched! Some upgrades: upgrade is the support for Flash Video, and the ability to browse Flash websites directly from your phone, MMI extensions for User Interface design. It seems to be very close to Flash 8 player. You can request a developer version from Adobe (certified on Nokia N95 only). Do remember to download the Flash Lite 3 update for Flash. The code performance is promised to be 15-20% faster, and rendering 20-30% faster. Related to this, Nokia has announced Creative Pros community (read the press release here). Check out the rest of his thoughts in the video. Click To Play After watching this video, I wondered if this device will make my recently reviewed Nokia N95-3 jealous. The camera lens are protected if placed on flat surface. Performance: the Inside Beauty Faster Internet. The Nokia N95-3 works with the fast 3G service by AT&T here in the United States that the Nokia N95-1 is lacking. To fix this, switch the camera mode to Night Portrait, a simple step that most current Nokia N95 users ignore. Sample picture with Nokia N95: Me and Darla Mack in front of Hollywood sign. Video is amazing on this little device, shooting 30 frames per second at VGA size (640 x 480 resolution). Reading from my blog, you can read all the things I can do with this phone, like install games and additional applications. Just be careful when putting it in your pocket along with your coins and keys. However like everything else, it is not perfect. The 5 megapixel camera and DVD-quality videos also make it a perfect gadget to whip out at unexpected events to record for memories. Don’t worry if your phone is lying flat on a surface, because the lens are slightly deeper. The difference? Make sure to check AT&T’s coverage map to see if your area has it. Longer life. The Nokia N95-1 came with 950mah battery, while the N95-3 comes with 1200mah. If you owned any kind of music player, then you’d know how to use these buttons. Since this is only a software issue, Nokia has no excuse not to include it in future firmwares. Include a “.com” shortcut to complete URL’s when browsing the web. This basically means you can run more than one applications at the same time, just like using a computer. Sounds bold but true. The black has a soft surface, while the brown one has a hard surface, feeling like hard plastic. iPhone Maps versus Nokia N95 GPS. The only problem I have with the GPS, is that I often get a “results not found” when searching using keywords. About a second. this improvement aspect really makes me hate Nokia for releasing the N95-1 with such a disgraceful battery life. True Multimedia Computer. I have yet to see an “out of memory” error or situations where programs just close unexpectedly in the background. After a few tries, the Nokia N95-1 opens the camera application faster when the shutter cover is opened, compared to holding the camera button in the Nokia N95-3. Everything was far from each other. Genius, I’ll use the GPS in my Nokia N95, while you go to a gas station to find out what zip code you need to enter in your iPhone’s Maps. Nokia needs to improve on that. Camera and Video. You can see all the Nokia blog videos on YouTube created on the Nokia N95-1 and my past Nseries phones. The autofocus takes forever in the dark, so you have to tell whoever you are taking picture of to stand still longer than average! This is very useful and is featured in the iPhone. The new Nokia N95-3 brings attention to the flaws of the older version, but I think it is currently the best phone/device out there. All the pictures in this post were taken with the Nokia N95. That is basically like DVD quality camcorder that fits in your pocket. Complaints and Suggestions. The Nokia N95-3 should have been the Nokia N95 that was initially released. Okay Mr. To give you an easier example, my Nokia N95-3 was fully charged this morning at 7AM and since then, I’ve left Jaiku on, continually browsed the web, checked email, watch youtube videos, took pictures, and surprisingly at 8PM I still have full battery bars. The Nokia N95-3 comes with a big improvement in RAM memory. I did not have trouble pressing the buttons in the older model but the upgrade is nice extra touch. Playback buttons on the Nokia N95-3 are more tactile. No Shutter Cover. Now on the newer Nokia N95-3, in order to use the 5 megapixel camera with Carl Zeiss lens, you can set up a shortcut on the active display, or simply press and hold the the camera button. The flash helps a little bit at night, but do not come out as good as the regular consumer cameras. If I had the Nokia N95-1 with me, it’d be already be giving me the beeping death of low-battery. If you need to know how many seconds it takes for the camera to open, it’s about 4 seconds in the Nokia N95-1 and about 5 seconds in the Nokia N95-3. A problem is that since the camera lens is unprotected by a cover, it might be prone to scratches. Complaints included slides that wobbled and made noises when you tap the bottom right facia. You can use the web, minimize the window and look at the picture gallery, then use the GPS, then go back to the camera to make a video, while Jaiku runs in the background updating your status. In summary, it is the Nokia N95 that should have been released in the first place because of the better build quality and better performance. I’m a little annoyed I had to buy a second phone to get the results I expected. The new multimedia menu is not available in the Nokia N95-3 yet. I went ahead for the black color, because it did not feel cheap, unlike the brown one. Brown or black? Better Slide. I did not find this problem on my Nokia N95-3. Better Build. The Nokia N95-3 is a double slider phone revealing the numeric keypad on one side, and dedicated music and video playbacks on the other. Which is faster? When I went to LA, there was no way I could have gone to places. It is like having a computer in my hands. Finding out where I am with the GPS only takes a few seconds.

To give you an easier example, my Nokia N95-3 was fully charged this morning at 7AM and since then, I’ve left Jaiku on, continually browsed the web, checked email, watch youtube videos, took pictures, and surprisingly at 8PM I still have full battery bars.

One of the things I love about my Nokia N95 is its 5-megapixel camera. Since I don’t leave home without my phone, that means I always have my camera. You can see the rest of the Brooklyn Bridge photos in my Flickr account. One of the bridge towers during the afternoon. View from Brooklyn moments after sunset. We enjoyed a nice view walking towards the middle of the bridge and then later drove to the Brooklyn side to watch the sunset with the Manhattan skyline. The Nokia N95’s 5-megapixel camera takes pictures up to 2592 x 1944 pixels, so I can make large prints if wanted. I usually just upload all my photos to Flickr.

8GB Nokia II Part Review: N81
With Ngage, we’re supposedly able to play against other people throughout the world, and instantly download and preview games into our phones. For this part of review, I’ll talk about what’s special about using the Nokia N81. The Nokia N81 is for people who want music and games. You can rewind or forward and change camera views. After transferring the files, the Nokia N81 recognizes the new files and asks if I want to refresh the music library. The dedicated buttons prove to be useful. To transfer music to the Nokia N81, I had to connect in Mass Storage mode then transfer the files over to the Music folder, the same way I would transfer files to a USB stick. I played with these settings on different songs. I would hate it if this device falls unto the hands of those annoying people who likes to play their musicphones without headseats or earphones in public like the trains and buses. Another way to play music is by pressing the the multimedia key where you can instantly play shuffled music or any of your playlists. In the end, I think the Nokia N81 does a great job as music-phone, and the upcoming Ngage games will be the main reason to consider buying this phone. For the newbies, the Nokia N81 8GB runs on the Symbian S60 operating system like many of the Nseries and Eseries phones. When I chose no, I couldn’t find a menu option to try refreshing the library again. In offense, one button for passing player, the other for shooting. What I didn’t like about the game is that you need to hold the ‘5′ button to sprint. Read more about the physical aspects of the phone in my first part of the Nokia N81 review. Music Playing Music. I don’t really spend much time with the music player in my phones, but for reviewing purposes, I actually enjoyed playing music with the Nokia N81. Watch it below. Album Art. Album art is not automatically transferred with the songs. Unfortunately, the Nokia N81 is not yet compatible with Multimedia Transfer. In the meantime, you can also install other non-Ngage games. The dedicated gaming buttons I mentioned in the first part of my Nokia N81 review becomes active and lights up when Ngage is running. For PC users, All About Symbian wrote a guide to adding album art to the music player with a PC. Unwired View captured a great video demo of the Nokia Music Store. Check out a video from Unwired View to have a sneak peek. Conclusion If you are looking for a phone with good camera, video, or GPS, you are looking at the wrong phone. Surely, I’ll be checking it out once Nokia announces it is available. Games The Ngage service cannot be fully accessed yet, but they provided three games for preview: Space Impact Light, FIFA 07, and Asphalt 3: Street Style. The speakers are also loud, perfect for a music device. The defenders will run after you and steal the ball if you keep the ball too long. Quick Access to the music player. The interface will remind you of the iPod, so you know it’s not complicated at all. Landscape view is the only way to play this game. You can choose whether you want the directional pad on your left or right when playing. Negative. There are a few negative points that I want to point out. Accessing music on the Nokia N81 couldn’t be any easier. One for turbo, the other for brake. Space Impact Light I’m not a big fan. Syncing music with a Mac is currently nonexistent and album art is a pain to add to the phone. This really depends by preference, but leaving both options off are also fine. The dedicated button is for shooting the special weapon. The preview for Ngage in the Nokia N81 is not a perfect representation of what’s to come. I’m not amazed at the graphics, but I’m impressed I’m playing a 3D soccer game on a phone. It’s fast to play music and the dedicated gaming keys really enhances the playing experience. Like I mentioned in the first part of my review, just pressing the play button at any time will play the last song. This happened so many times, that I just decided to turn off the option in the settings. You’ll be fine if you play in upright portrait mode, but that’s not as fun. Asphalt 3: Street Style. This is my favorite of the three games. The Naviwheel scrolls up and down lists… yes, just like an iPod. They find the procedure a pain. You can learn more about S60 if you are interested in these really powerful devices. With Ngage nearing its grand opening, the Nokia N81 is looking to be the ultimate gaming phone. In defense, one button to change player, the other for slide tackle. I’ll tell you how they are used in the three Ngage preview games: Fifa 07. What’s cool about Fifa 07 is that you have two options of landscape views. In the second part of my Nokia N81 8GB review, I’ll cover the main functions of the device that makes it stand out from the rest of the Nokia Nseries: its Music and Gaming features. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, take a train in New York City around 4-5pm. The speakers are placed on the sides and play LOUD. Transferring Music. I’m a Mac user and Nokia provides the Nokia Multimedia Transfer application to transfer music, photos, and files with compatible Nokia phones. Nokia should add this as an option or just refresh the music library automatically. Buying Music. The music store is not available yet and you will see a web page that requires a password login if you try accessing it. Simple, not bad-looking, and fun. My problem with the Naviwheel is often when I press down, it thinks I’m rotating the wheel. Sometimes the differences are barely noticeable, while others are obviously better or worse. You basically just move around most of the time while the ship automatically shoots. We’ll see if software updates fix these problems. —Related Articles at the Nokia blog:Video: Nokia N81 8GB Final Production Unboxing and Initial UsageVideo: Nokia N81 Commercial The Next EpisodeNokia N95 Review by the Nokialist Part 1Review: Nokia N81 8GB Part INokia N95 8GB CommercialVideo: The Nokia N81 Song Lip Sync Replays are fun also. There has to be a better way for a better music experience. Currently playing songs with and without Album art. Extra Settings. The Nokia N81 music player comes with loudness and stereo widening effects as options. Nokia says the service will be available in November. Results varied.

LA Nokia Nseries Recap Unlocked Party
We walked through Rodeo drive in the morning. Reviews, videos, and interviews will be posted later in separate posts. Ricky from Symbian-Guru checking the Nokia Nseries Golf Carts. A shuttle bus took us to the road entrance leading to the mansion. at the Nokia blog”>Nokia flew me from New York to join them in Los Angeles. | Home”>N95 Users, and Mike from Acid Studioz to check out Los Angeles in the afternoon. The bloggers walking through Rodeo Drive. I’m bigger than Hollywood! You can see all the pictures I took from my Nokia N95 on Flickr. Nokia, why do I have to choose?! Not So Great A few demonstrators that did not know much about the product they are demonstrating. Gift bags with missing items. I wish I spent more time playing with the phones, but was distracted by talking to a lot of people. Each room had plenty of phones for everyone to play with. A manager telling me they have a department reading the blogs, discuss in meetings what are being written and put in consideration to determine what needs to be done. I get to compare the Nokia N95-3 to N95 8gb to help me decide which one is better for me. Bigger screen or faster internet? Golf carts with Nokia Nseries decals on the windshield and Nokia N95 US 3G’s attached to the windshield playing that now annoying Mobi Nseries song. Others took the opportunity to fire off some annoyances and problems with the current phones. I think that can also be considered a good thing. Some of the HOFO crew. Another room for taking pictures and uploading to Flickr. There were also Nseries Mini Coopers outside the mansion. Main lobby of the mansion. Event Rundown Nokia stayed true to the party itinerary, showing the new phones Nokia N95-3, Nokia N95 8GB, Nokia N81, and Nokia N81 8GB available to play with. Some asked about WiMax and the rumored tablets. Arlequin, Gwapz, Angel_Wing, Monad1, and Kevlarman. The Day After We did not have much time to tour LA after the party, but definitely but tried to make the best of it. Nokia placed emphasis on the web browser, 5 megapixel camera, games, and GPS. There was an arcade room showing off the N-gage service. A photo booth where photos were taken from a Nokia N95 then printed on the spot. Outside was a table for the GPS demonstrations. I’m trying out the new N-Gage service. GPS demo and the DJ playing music from a Nokia N95. Later in the evening, we went into in a quieter room with product managers for questions and answers. The Nokia Los Angeles Mansion Party will be unforgettable for me. Then I get the opportunity to meet many of the Nokia blogging/forums community in person in one place. There were lots of it so you did not have to wait long to get your hands on one. Can’t decide which one I want. The rooms in the mansion had different themes and purposes. Also plenty of pictures are uploaded there from several people from their phones because of the built-in upload feature on the Nseries. —Related Articles at the Nokia blog:Complete Recap of Nokia Open Studio 2006 NYNokia Los Angeles Mansion Party ItineraryNokia is Flying Me Over to Los Angeles! The Nokia N95 is Now AvailableNokia N76, N93i, and N800 Added to Nseries PageLive Pictures: Evening with S60 at New York Nokia Store To top it all, I talked one-on-one with the product managers responsible for the phones and devices I love. No surprises of new devices like the rumored Nokia N82, or the next Nokia tablet on FCC.
